Breathe Easy This Season: How Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Help You Conquer Allergies Naturally

If you’re like many people, you might feel like allergy season creeps up earlier and stays longer every year. The sneezing, stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and even headaches can make you want to stay indoors and hide from every blooming tree and blade of grass. But here’s some good news: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a natural, time-tested way to not just manage allergy symptoms — but help your body fight them from the inside out.

At Round Rock Health & Wellness Center, we love helping our patients find relief from allergies using TCM’s holistic approach. Let’s dive into how it works!

How Does TCM Help with Allergies?

TCM views seasonal allergies as a sign of an underlying imbalance in your body’s energy (Qi), particularly in the Lung and Wei (defensive) Qi systems. The Lung governs breathing and immune defense, while Wei Qi is like your body’s protective shield against external pathogens — like pollen!

When these systems are weak or disrupted, your body overreacts to allergens.

TCM works by:

  • Strengthening your Wei Qi (immune defense)

  • Supporting healthy Lung function

  • Calming inflammation

  • Regulating your body's natural response to allergens

Our treatments focus on both immediate relief and long-term balance, helping you build resilience over time.

Acupuncture + Herbal Support = Allergy Relief

Acupuncture can help reduce nasal congestion, calm the immune system, and improve energy flow. Specific points are targeted to relieve sinus pressure, itchy eyes, and sneezing.

But you don’t have to wait for your next appointment to get relief! Try these easy acupressure points at home:

🌿 LI-20 (Welcome Fragrance)Located on either side of your nostrils, press gently for about a minute to help relieve nasal congestion and sinus pressure.

🌿 Yintang (Hall of Impression)Right between your eyebrows, this point calms the mind and opens up nasal passages. Use your fingertip to press or massage in a circular motion.

🌿 LI-4 (Hegu / Joining Valley)Found in the fleshy area between your thumb and index finger. Apply firm pressure — this powerful point boosts immunity and clears stuffy sinuses.

Chinese Herbal Remedies for Allergies

Herbs play a big role in TCM’s approach to allergies. Depending on your specific symptoms and constitution, we may recommend formulas like:

🌿 Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction)Great for tackling congestion, sneezing, and clear nasal discharge.

🌿 Cang Er Zi San (Xanthium Powder)Known for relieving sinus pressure, nasal congestion, and headaches.

🌿 Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen Powder)A powerful formula to strengthen your immune defense and prevent future allergy flare-ups.

Don't worry! We have herbs for purchase in office or we can have a special formula ordered for you.

**Important note: Herbs should always be recommended by a licensed practitioner to make sure they’re right for you! Not local? We can set up a teledoc appointment for you!
