Expectant Mamas

ABOUT THE TREATMENTS

Treatment plans are developed after the initial consultation with Dr. Blair or Dr. Amanda. Expecting mothers are encouraged to clear any type of chiropractic treatment with their OB-GYN before their first session. Once the patient is cleared for treatment, the first session will include various techniques, stretches, and exercises depending on the mother’s condition and stage of pregnancy. The frequency of treatment is solely dependent on the desire of the patient. Mothers may only visit a chiropractor once, during or after their pregnancy and others receive weekly or monthly treatments.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Once a thorough consultation has been completed, mothers can move forward with the treatment plan that was designed to fit their individual needs. Expecting moms will often be guided onto a massage table with the support of a specialized pregnancy pillow, and then placed either on their back, side or stomach, depending on the type of adjustment that is being made. Techniques involve direct contact, tools like the activator, and adjustable tables. Receiving adjustments to the spine and pelvis can help with morning sickness, back pain, shortness of breath and swollen ankles/feet. Patients often report receiving a better night sleep after receiving chiropractic care.

PREGNANCY CHIROPRACTIC TECHNIQUES:

Webster Technique

This method is a 2-part adjustment that restores function and alignment in the pelvis. This creates more freedom for the baby to move around and turn. First, the Chiropractor will have the expectant mom lay comfortably on her stomach and will then bring her heels gently toward her back to determine misalignment of the sacrum. The sacrum is the bone that supports the upper body and pelvis. Once this is determined, realignment will be made to the sacrum. During the second part of the adjustment, the pregnant patient will lay flat on her back to receive a gentle press of the round ligament to release tension.

Diversified
This is probably the most common technique performed by Chiropractors. It involves various manual maneuvers that realign the joints and spine. This is also referred to as the High Velocity Low Amplitude Thrust (HVLA). In pregnant women, however, the moves are carefully performed and specific areas are targeted that will not harm the baby or the mother.

Flexion Distraction
This combines the use of a motorized table and manual adjustments performed by the Chiropractor. The table creates gentle rhythmic motions that help realign the spine, while providing the mom-to-be with comfort and healing.

Activator
This is the use of a small hand held device that creates gentle impulses. The device is held against the skin to massage muscles, tendons and ligaments. It may also be used during the Webster Technique to adjust the sacrum. Pregnant women often love this technique because it feels wonderful against their sore and aching joints and muscles.

Thompson
The Thompson Technique utilizes a drop table to assist in enforcing realignment. Patients will either lay on their back, stomach or side on top of the table during this technique.

Kinesio Taping
Breathable tape is often used to restrict or comfort muscles. Taping can provide extra support to a mother’s core.
